THE BASE

The Base project has been in existence since summer 2002, when Milton Keynes Young Carers Project approached MKPA to see what we could offer the young people during the school holidays and has now been running every school holiday, except Christmas, since then. During the half terms we run one day a week and during Easter and summer we run two days a week.

We can accommodate up to 30 children between the ages of 8 and 14, with 4 members of staff. Transport is provided for those who would otherwise be unable to attend. Everything is free for the children. The Base runs from the Watling Way Centre on Galley Hill, the centre comprises of a sports hall, swimming pool, kitchen and a small ‘chill out room’. The activities provided range from Arts and crafts, sports, games, books, cooking and of course swimming. We have two qualified pool staff and have an array of equipment for the pool, basketball net, floats, ball and more. We sometimes have visitors to show us new skills or build on existing ones. The scheme gives the children a chance to be children and not to have to worry about the responsibilities they have at home, also to mix with other children who are in a similar position to themselves.

The feed back from the children and parents has been positive and it is a very much needed and wanted scheme.
